What is 'Integration'?

In the Psychedelic space, we hear a lot about 'integration', but what actually is it? And how do we do it?

When we dive into an expanded state of consciousness, whether through psychedelics, breath work, or other transformative practices, we are essentially unmooring ourselves from the familiar shores of our everyday mind. This expansive experience has the ability to shift our worldview, reveal hidden aspects of ourselves, and connect us with a deeper awareness and sensitivity.

However, it has been argued, once the initial experience is over, ‘the real work’ begins. It is in the process of integration, that we take the realisations from our journey and practically apply them to our everyday lives here on earth.

So, what exactly is integration, and why is it so crucial to our personal growth and healing?

The Expanded State: Pulling Up the Anchor

Imagine you're a ship, anchored, tethered to the known. When you enter an expanded state of consciousness, it’s like the anchor is pulled up, setting you free to sail into unknown waters. In neuroscience terms we are deactivating the Default Mode Network (DMN), which normally keeps us anchored in our self-referential, ego-based identity. During this journey, you may experience profound shifts, uncover hidden emotions, and receive insights that feel life-changing. These insights act as your compass, guiding your course, showing you new paths, and offering clarity on aspects of your life that were once unclear. Only receiving the insights isn't enough.

The Integration Process: Sailing Toward Wholeness

Integration is about bringing the lessons learned in expanded states into your everyday life. Just as a sailor needs more than just a compass to navigate, you need more than just awareness, you need to make conscious choices, embody new practices, and embrace change.

Jungian psychology refers to this process as individuation - the journey of becoming whole by integrating the unconscious parts of the self with the conscious mind.
When we expand our consciousness, parts of us that were previously hidden or repressed often emerge. These parts might be uncomfortable, confronting, or even overwhelming. In embracing and integrating these elements, we reconcile the contradictions within ourselves and move toward greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.

The Role of Integration in Healing

Integration plays a crucial role in healing. When we enter an expanded state, we often confront wounds, traumas, or unresolved emotions. These experiences are not simply uncovered for intellectual understanding - they arise to be felt, processed, and released. Integration provides the space to sit with those feelings, to work through them, and to bring healing into the body and mind.

This is where practices like somatic therapy, mindfulness, journaling, and creative expression come into play. They allow you to integrate your emotional, mental, and physical experiences from the journey. By giving these insights a place to land in your body and daily life, you facilitate the healing process, helping you release what no longer serves you and embrace a more whole, authentic version of yourself.

The Practical Side of Integration
It’s all good and well integrating at a beautiful retreat centre, surrounded by nature, with all the time in the world, and trained professionals around you. However, for most of us, this comes crashing down pretty quickly, plunged back into office jobs, parenting or relationship commitments, slowly the bliss or lessons fade into the 'I'll deal with that later' category.
How do you integrate an expanded state of consciousness in practical terms, and to make the most out of your experience?

Here are some tools, that you can stitch into your everyday life:

  1. Reflection and Journaling: Write down your insights, feelings, and any imagery that stood out during the experience. Journaling helps you process your emotions and begin to make sense of the lessons learned. Ask yourself: What have I learned about myself? What can I do differently moving forward? I have an integration journal designed to facilitate this reflection.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DKY2SW8M
  2. Embodied Practices: Yoga, dance, or other movement-based activities help ground and integrate the experience into your body. These practices allow you to embody the insights and keep them alive in the physical realm.
  3. Meditation and Mindfulness: Continued meditation helps you stay connected to the insights you gained, allowing you to integrate them with a quiet, receptive mind. Mindfulness in everyday activities also supports the process of integration by encouraging you to live in the present moment. When you’re driving, drive. When you’re washing the dishes, wash the dishes, as if its the most important thing in the world. Stay as close to your present moment as possible.
  4. Community and Support: Sharing your experience with a trusted friend, mentor, or therapist can provide valuable perspective and guidance. Integration doesn’t have to be done alone—sometimes, talking through what you experienced with others can deepen your understanding. 5. Take Action: Ultimately, integration is about making real changes. If your journey revealed that you need to set stronger boundaries or pursue a new career, taking small, consistent actions toward those goals will help solidify your transformation.

Becoming Whole: The Final Destination

The integration process, in essence, is the journey from fragmentation to wholeness. It’s about reconciling the different aspects of yourself- the light and the shadow - and allowing them to coexist in harmony.

It’s about becoming more of who you truly are, rather than staying stuck in old patterns or limiting beliefs.

As you integrate, you become the captain of your own ship, navigating through both calm waters and stormy seas with newfound clarity and strength. You become more grounded, more present, and more aligned with your truth.

The expanded state may have set you free, but integration is the act of living that freedom in the world.
